Social Achievers

A Social Skills Program to Help Children & Adolescents Develop & Enhance Socialization Skills

Wendy Hasychak, L.P.C. - Program Director

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow socially, experience the joy of playing with friends and academically succeed. Unfortunately, disruptive class behavior, peer rejection and social alienation can cause psychological difficulties that are reflected in poor academic performance, low self-esteem and feelings of loneliness. Social Achievers assumes a positive social skills approach to treating children who suffer from peer rejection and social isolation by teaching and building new behaviors that are pro-social, adaptive and appropriate. Social Achievers is an interactive small group program designed to develop social skills with school-aged children and adolescents.

Social Achievers emphasizes five core social skills:

  1. Cooperation: Goals include ignoring class distractions from classmates, making appropriate transitions, using free time appropriately, finishing classroom assignments within time limits and following teacher's instructions.
  2. Assertion: Goals include giving compliments, making appropriate introductions, making positive self-statements, initiating conversations, joining ongoing activities, and inviting others to join activities.
  3. Responsibility: Goals include asking adults for help, paying attention to speakers, politely refusing unreasonable requests from others, asking permission before using other people's property, reporting accidents to appropriate persons, and responding to compliments.
  4. Empathy: Goals include saying socially enhancing remarks to others, nonverbally greeting or acknowledging others, feeling sorry for others when bad things happen to them and listening to adults when they are talking.
  5. Self Control: Goals include getting along with people who are different, accepting peer's suggestions, cooperating with peers without prompting, responding to peer pressure appropriately, compromising in conflict situations, receiving criticism well, and responding appropriately when pushed or hit by others.

Social Achievers builds social skills through group activities, modeling behavior, coaching, behavioral rehearsal, social problem solving, homework assignments and peer feedback.
